“Zentangle is a fun and satisfying way to achieve a peaceful, meditative state. Emily is a masterful teacher: explaining, encouraging and demonstrating in a supportive and joyful way.“

Who are my Zentangle clients?
I teach anyone and everyone – kids 10 years old and older, and adults up to any age. The Zentangle Method is truly accessible to everyone. No artistic background is needed; just an open mind and heart to creativity. A central tenet of the method is that there are No Mistakes. You keep going without judgment and work on the next mark of your pen. There is no up or down to the images you create. You are working to find the flow, and you will be amazed at what you can create.
What’s the Zentangle® Method?
The Zentangle Method deconstructs beautiful patterns or “tangles” into clear step-by-step components. The method begins with a centering of self in a moment of Gratitude and Appreciation and ends with Appreciation of what you have created. By following the steps and motions of a tangle you can achieve a sense of flow, where you can focus on each stroke of your pen and you do not concentrate on the final outcome. You ground yourself in the present, which is something we encourage in coaching.
Zentangle.com sells high quality materials – the best paper and pens. While you don’t need to use these, they are beautiful and enhance the experience of learning the Zentangle Method.
How do I know if Zentangle is for me?
People often have excuses for why they can’t tap into their creativity, and specifically why they can’t draw. Do these excuses sound familiar? Not enough time, money, tools, training, talent, space, ability, patience, confidence and/or motivation.
The Zentangle Method has been helpful for people in recovery, for pain reduction, depression, attention deficit disorders, motor skill therapy, and anxiety. It works for team building and problem solving. And of course it can be pure enjoyment.
The benefits of a Zentangle practice are improved confidence, mindfulness, inspiration, relaxation, community, awareness, new perspectives, and empowerment.
Workshops
I teach Introduction and Advanced Zentangle classes. Each class lasts around two hours. The Introduction class starts with the basic steps of the Zentangle Method and then all participants watch, learn, and create a tile with a few tangles. It is amazing that each person creates a unique image, even when the tangles are the same. Advanced classes are designed with a theme such as geometric or botanical tangles, love, spirals, lettering, etc. I work with the creativity of what individuals and groups want.
Already existing groups are welcome. Zentangle classes work well for women’s groups, book clubs, men’s groups, scout troops, clubs, family get togethers, birthdays, and/or reunions, etc. I have taught the same group over multiple days, weeks, and months, beginning with an introductory session, and then tailoring subsequent sessions to what resonated with the group. I have had groups create a multifaceted image that emerges once the artwork is combined.

“As with all great teachers, Emily’s classes are filled with her enthusiasm for the subject. She so clearly enjoys Zentangle and joyfully shares that with her students. It makes me want to keep taking her classes and practicing Zentangle on my own.”
— R, Philadelphia

Zentangle Online
I offer Zentangle classes over Zoom. My set-up includes two cameras which means that you are able to see what I’m drawing while simultaneously seeing me.
I teach classes with materials from Zentangle.com, that I send to each participant. I also offer classes where you can use your own materials. For example, I taught a family reunion event with people in multiple countries, and only sent Zentangle materials to those who requested. The other participants used recommended supplies they obtained locally.
The price per participant differs based on materials provided.

Hear From Others
“I had a great time with Emily in our Zentangle session. When I first heard what we were doing and saw Emily’s amazing sample pieces, I thought, “Oh no, I’ll be terrible at this, I’m not very artistic.” But with her affirming guidance and reassurance that “There are no mistakes,” I was able to create beautiful pieces worthy of pride. After working on a couple of tiles to the point of my liking, I sat mesmerized just watching Emily demonstrate other patterns that we could add for embellishment. That was almost as meditative as working on a tile myself!“

“Zentangle is deeply relaxing, much to my surprise! You follow the steps and you find yourself in a “flow” state and an hour has passed. AND, you’re left with a beautiful piece of art to admire.
Zentangle is accessible, portable and relaxing. In todays’ turbulent times, having a calming method that I can do on a plane, at a coffee shop, or at my own kitchen table is immeasurably helpful.
Emily expertly taught us how to start our Zentangle drawings and how to continue the practice on our own. Her camera set up made it easy to follow on Zoom. I am so pleased I took this class and look forward to many more.“

“Our group’s two-session virtual workshop with Emily was enriching and went smoothly. She prepared by asking about our group’s priorities and pre-delivering materials; she adapted our second day to build on some of our expressed interests and our group dynamics. One of my favorite elements was that she devised a way for our individual work to merge into an unexpected but delightful collective result. This introduction to Zentangle was a treat!“

“Emily is a talented artist and an even more talented teacher. I took an online class with a group of friends and we were all pleasantly surprised by the beauty of our creations! I found the experience so soothing that I followed up with Emily for a one-on-one session. Highly recommend!“

Sooooo….I was wondering if you’ve run into anyone with tangle addiction yet? Because I can’t seem to stop! Do you know how many hours a day I could spend doing this?! At the cost of not doing other things? And WHILE I’m supposed to be doing other things, or in meetings, or during choir practice, or for the duration of most of an international flight, or an entire train ride when I meant to read, or instead of going to sleep at night… and I’ve bought more pens, and notebooks – plain, and with dots….and I like to do them with gel pens, and felt-tipped pens, and water-colors. OH! And my ENTIRE SCREEN TIME DOOM SCROLLING is now dedicated to watching doodling – I could do it alllll day, and then I take a screen shot of my favorites, and copy a link to that reel, and store them all in a note for future inspiration, so my entire phone storage will soon be clogged with it. It’s becoming a real problem, and [Emily] is to blame…; for being such an awesome teacher and guide!
